Rain tipped to bring good wheat harvest for last week’s winter crop but with less rain in coming weeks, farmers in north India expect wheat production to come in under 4 million tonnes on Monday – well below expectations of 18 million tonnes in 2015, reports Agence France-Presse (AFP).
More than half of the harve안마st, of 6.7 million tonnes, was harvested in Assam, with Assam producing an additional 5.3 million tonnes, the Agriculture Ministry said.
But rainfall across southern India, including Punjab, West Bengal, Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Mizoram, fell from last week, with the total recorded at only 1.4 per cent – a small boost for last week’s harvest.
The latest forecasts also expected the monsoon to make further progress.
The last rainfall recorded for 2017 came in September, when the monsoon was less than one month old – but at the end of the year India experienced record rainfall in some parts of the country, including Punjab.

The worst-affected areas were parts of Uttar Pradesh (up to about 1.5 million hectares) and Jammu and Kashmir, where more than 1 million hectares were damaged or destroyed during the monsoon rains, the ministry said.

However, some experts say India will not experience large drought this winter due to the rains that began earlier this month.
The central government has so far started its monsoon program, which is expected to raise crop yields from the spring crop this year, in drought-stricken districts of South Asia, India’s second-largest economy.
